I was able to move my site up on Google to page one bouncing between spot 1-4 using two of the most prominent keywords on my site.  99% of the time I had people use the exact anchor text of the keywords when linking to me.

I also built my own links, through article directories, blogrolls, and text links, using the exact anchor text for the keywords.  It worked.

On my new site I have graduated to a system very close to what you describe in this post.  I now have my main keyword and usually 8 related keywords.
ie...widget
red widget
blue widget
round widget
etc....

When I link I will use &quot;widget&quot; 80% of the time and the related keywords the other 20%.  Not only does this vary the anchor text but it also helps you rank for the related terms.</description>
