Hi David,

You make some great points.

I totally agree, using bounce rates as a ranking factor is an unstable metric and may be unfair to informational sites that have the searched data on one page. I am not saying user behaviour will never play a role but for now I am pretty confident it isn't in the mix.

" I have always been of the opinion that bounce rates are not really a factor in the Google mix yet; this is mainly due to the fact that not everyone uses analytics so how would a ranking algorithm based on bounce rates be fair?"

I am not an SEO wizz, far, far from it, but I came to the same conclusion myself. The only way Google would know what bounced, would be if they knew the visitor had been there in the first place - and they won't know that unless the site has Analytics implemented.

But I also thought "What do I know? Maybe there is something I don't understand about how this all works."

So it's good to hear you say the same.

And as Avinash Kaushik of Google Analytics has pointed out, a high bounce rate could mean that a visitor came to do something on one page, did what they wanted to do and left highly satisfied.
