[...] However, the link building fun doesn’t stop there. It’s occurred to me typing this now that Yousaf, Andrew and Mike could possibly share this post via their Twitter profiles and possibly link to it from their own sites because they’re mentioned in it. In fact, there’s a chance that others in the SEO industry will be interested due to the industry’s strong sense of community (you only have to take a look at the likes of SEOmoz’s thriving SEO community and the WebmasterWorld Forums to see how strong the communities can be as well as the simple fact that most SEOs like to help each other out). Plus we like to defend hurtful, attacking comments made towards SEOs (remember the guy who called us “SEO bastards,” and the SEOs who wrote blog posts in response?) [...]

@creativeonion,

Thanks, I was always in too minds whether to publish a response or not, partly because I value my time and partly because I didn't want to give him the benefit of the traffic and link :) . There are so many people with this opinion of SEO whoever never really delved into the industry. It made me laugh when he said "I now rank nineth for SEO, just by writing an article people enjoy and telling a few friends on facebook" no that didn't rank you the insane amount of links you got did, SEO right?

Anyway glad to see Google has updated the SERPS and dropped the page, getting a site there is one thing, sustaining it is quite another.

Thanks for the comment.

I really appreciate your response to Derek's ignorant rant. You're right that it didn't really deserve a response, but there are a lot of hard working professionals (like yourself) who could be hurt by such gross information.

I found it funny/ironic that Derek didn't even use the proper term for what he was describing - "blackhat" practices. Most likely because he doesn't know what blackhat or whitehat tactics are, let alone the difference between them.

Again, thank you Tim!

Thanks timthief,

The truuth is these rants are pretty regular, this one particularly ignorant. I don't know anyone who has practised SEO and found it to be a scam or swindle, in fact I know web developers that have come to discover and appreciate SEO as a valid marketing strategy.

Well said Tim. I have used your free tutorials to educate myself and I find the rant you have responded to to be entirely off-base.
