Hi James,

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it. The outbound links factor used to be a bit of an SEO golden nuggett, however it is common knowledge now. Interesting to here about the PR4 page, that means it must have been getting it's juice internally.

Great article! I have seen evidence of this myself,(i.e a particular page on a legal site became a pagerank 4 with no inbound links!) your content here is fascinating,
I'll be sure to come and read your blog again Tim and bookmark your pages
5 Stars!

@ashok,

You obviously need to keep up all your usual SEO techniques but you will be surprised with the effect optimised outbound links can have, good luck

Thank you for the advice! I never really thought about associating many of the "authority" articles I link to with a specific keyword; I usually just list the author's name and article title in the anchor text. Will have to consider doing that next time I create a link.

Hi Mike,

I can't really answer how links in footers or like you say a blogroll, effect the boost outgoing links give. As you will see I don't use a blogroll and it's not because I don't like any I just think it creates too many outgoing links on the most powerful page of your site, the homepage, I regularly refer to other blogs in my posts editorially and in my opinion that is a better quality of link anyway.

The way I see it is when thinking about link building you should be looking for naturally given editorial links, if this is Google wants to see from the links pointing at your site why wouldn't they want to see it from the links pointing out? Another Google mystery but thats my take :)

Tim,
Well, you answered my questions before I even asked them. Many thanks. I have wrestling with this question off-and-on for some time but had not seen anyone address it as effectively as you have done here. You answered my questions and then some. I have been hesitant to include many outbound links for some of the exact reasons you mentioned. I'll feel a bit less restricted now.

I'm assuming that these outgoing links are in-context links or links within a post. How would the outgoing linking benefits apply to things like a blog log or a list of links not within a post? Perhaps a list of "Great Blogs to Check Out" links in a sidebar or footer?
