Don’t Let Bad Advice Ruin Your Campaign

This topic has got me writing at 1am in the morning here in the UK, it has frustrated me to such a degree I have been thinking about what to write all day.

I published an article yesterday about where to get links from and what different kinds of links provide your link profile with.

One of the methods I talked about was article marketing as a form of building up raw link popularity and anchor text relevance. I awoke this morning with an email from a good friend and reader here at SEO wizz stating that he had been told by high profile bloggers that article marketing was a waste of time and had no benefit to a site.

I am not going to name names as I don’t want to turn this post into a battle ground, but this situation highlighted to me a fundamental problem online and that is “we believe everything the power bloggers tell us”. How many times have you read something and then gone to test it out?? I bet few and none.

There are different types of online species, there are pure bloggers, who engage in social media and believe in creating diverse content to drive traffic to a site. Then you have the good old ‘ebook pushers’ who usually sell crap from a cheap landing page and a huge email list. Then you have internet marketers, they optimise sites to rank highly in the search engines and then monetise the traffic with ads and affiliate products.

All these different online entities have different ways of going about things, a pure blogger who simply writes content and engages in social media will spend years writing content before seeing any search traffic, I have been asked to assist some pretty high profile bloggers with increasing search traffic. Blogging is great and if you’re good at what you do and are consistent you will see success in the long run.

If you want to see search traffic sooner rather than later you are going to have to put your internet marketing hat on and use some SEO techniques to get some truly targeted traffic. Using techniques other than writing great content is not spamming, you can still provide value to the web with a link in mind. This is exactly why article marketing is a great way to build links and provide Google with some genuine content.

OK first of all what qualifies me to be giving you this advice?

giving advice on this subject. If you’re struggling to increase your organic traffic you should definitely read on.

So back to the article marketing issue, why are people so hostile towards it? Well let me deal with the myths, this may hopefully clear up a few issues.

Duplicate Content

Duplicate content is only going to be an issue to your site if you use the articles from your site to submit to directories. If you rewrite an article from your site and make it totally different in structure you can also submit this to an article directory. So if you’re worried about duplicate content stop, it is blown way out of proportion.

Save The Content For Your Site

Yes your best articles should be posted at your own site. The articles you submit to directories do not need the same amount of effort, they simply need to talk about the basics of the niche you are targeting. Again there is nothing spammy about this, some people are looking for the basics, not everyone looking for SEO advice wants to know about domain juice and domain level metrics, only geeks like me bother with that :)

Ok if you still think I am lying to you let’s look at a few facts, I did some digging into link profiles.

Both these sites have published a ton of articles and if you look at most top sites 90% of them have implemented some form of content distribution for link building purposes.

I am not saying article marketing is the be all and end all of your link building, far from it. I would recommend giving it around 20% of your link building focus and if you’re targeting a niche keyword you may only need to issue a few articles to hit the first page.

Nearly Forgot

How many do you submit and how often?? OK I am going to give you a tip here and most of you will ignore it or think I am trying to sell you something. The best way to go about article marketing is through a submission service, I personally use article marketer as I find it creates more links and the links carry more juice. If you don’t want to try this then submit to multiple directories for free.

  • Submit Unique Articles
  • Anchor 1 Link to your homepage and one link to a deep page
  • Use relevant keywords in the title and body
  • Submit regularly for maximum effect

Article marketing does play a role in link building, of course as your site grows in popularity and strength the need to publish articles will be less as loads of webmasters around the web will be posting about your wonderful site, however it’s great to build a platform from.

Great article and again, I’ve always used Article Marketing as part of my link building campaign.

When you refer to anchor text – are are referring to the resource box or the body of the article or both?

If you can get it in the article content as well thats great, I’m glad other people don’t just listen to all the so called pros and drop kick article marketing, I also hope those that read this post apply it. As I said in the post it’s no the be all and end all but it creates an unbeatable foundation. I have been targeting the keyword “search engine optimisation” recenlty, really tough keyword but already google.com page 3 and UK page 5/6, all I can say is watch out. :)

Excellent post. Answers a number of the traffic-related blogging questions that I have been wrestling with for some time. It is extremely helpful to get this level of insight from someone who has “been there, done that.” Great examples in your post.

I thought the way you divided the different type of “online species” was right on the money. And as with any project your methods and tactics need to align with your goals. High profile, well-known bloggers who are drawing 15,000 unique visitors to their site each day will have different goals and therefore different tactics than those of us with much smaller audiences.

You have convinced me to do more article marketing. Big Question: How many directories can I submit the same article to? 1 directory, 2, 10, 150? And does this matter? Thanks for a very helpful post.

Hi Mike

Glad you liked it. My honest advice with regards to article marketing and how many directories is simply as many as possible. It is one of those methods where you through as much as you can and hope 10-20 bits stick. One thing I will say is to keep you content clean, by that I mean don’t just publish rubbish, make it insightful without spending hours on it. If you know your niche well I am sure you could reel off some interesting articles.

If you write 2 articles a week and publish them through out a few different directories, I guarantee in 2 months time you will have seen a difference in your rankigs and search traffic. It an ideal method of keeping you link foundation strong

You link building should be split 25% article marketing, 20% directory hunting, 60% writing quality content for your blog and guest posts.

I found my way here from a link in a post on WeBuildYourBlog. I can confirm that article marketing does work and there is now a way to generate unique very high quality articles. It is not a spinner and every word is one you have written. If you don’t already know what I’m talking about contact me and I will tell you about it. (You don’t know me and I don’t want to offend you by link dropping.)

It appears to me that some SEO sites and power bloggers intentionally engage in disinformation. Perhaps they feel that if they can dissuade many from believing something works it makes it easier for them – eliminates the competition so to speak.

I am a strange type of blogger. I seek out who knows the most about any particular speciality, share what I have learned, and test everything personally. I have years of experience managing pay per click accounts with access to analytics for dozens of ecommerce stores so I could see how changes affected results.

Although I am not opposed to monetizing blogs, I do very little of that because I ocus almost all my time figuring out and then explaining what really works in a way that even those with no background can understand it.

Article marketing certainly works, especially in smaller niches. When it comes to unique articles and an increase in indexed links I think article wizard is hard to beat. I think at the top end of a popular niche you need to do more than article marketing and incorporate many strategies. I also think those already at the top forget about the small steps all internet marketers need to take to gain some ground. Yes if you have a high ranking site receiving thousands of viral links a month there is no need for articles, however to get noticed in the first place you must generate links regardless of the quality.
