Hi Travis,

Don't get me wrong here I know the value of quality unique content. The problem is a blogger comes along, puts a blog together with really amazing content but think that is all they need to do, if no one sees it no one will link to it, if no one links to it, Google will not likely index it, no Google no search traffic, 6 months down the line they give up because no one visits their blog.

You have to have a channel of promotion, SEO is one of them. I agree content is king, as long as you use your unique content in other places rather than your blog, this helps to build links, then traffic, readership, links and then higher rankings.

I am going to post on this soon, so watch this space :)

I do ultimately think that content is king because... if you're not producing high-quality, original content, then what good are you doing to your readers? I know that's not the SOLE way to achieve a high search engine ranking, but I think it's the best way to maintain readership. Of course... who says you can't have both! Create great content AND promote your site.... that's the best overall strategy anyone can have.

@searchbrat,

It is so funny those who think they can experience success without implementing SEO. Obviously you can rank high with a totally natural site but you must first get recognition througha marketing campaign of some sort, then your site has to be link worthy. How many people do you think are going to link to a price comparison site? Yet they still get the links, the fact is, in my opinion every online business needs to implement SEO.

Don't worry about the link, its all good if its relevant.

Nice list, reminds me of a meeting I had with a "web entrepreneur" who had a web business but wasn't getting any visitors. He had no concept of online marketing tactics, he believed in "If you build they will come". I tried to explain "If you build it, they may come" dependent on it being something they want and if you have the ability to market it online.
Nice to compare this to my post along the exact same line http://www.searchbrat.com/how-to-ensure-your-seo-strategy-fails-like-a-champion
Sorry for the link in a comment, I am not spamming !!! Just thought it was relevant ...

Thanks

@Mike,

It's the number one reason many bloggers quit, they spend massive amounts of time creating great content but only a few people visit therefore only a few link back. You can always indulge heavily in social media in order to create a reader base but still the links are going to be slow coming in. I believe firmly in a healthy balance in all things, a few hours a week to social media, a few more to link building and the rest of the time I like to put some good posts forward, not all posts are riverting but they are all optimised, just about. For me this is the best way to build an online presence.

Tim,
While I think I've been guilty of all three charges at one time or another I particularly liked the "Content Is King Myth." For anyone new to blogging it is really easy to become convinced by many of the most popular blogs that if you write useful, interesting content readers will come flocking to your blog by the thousands in no time.

Not quite reality. Of course it is very important to create quality content that people will find worthwhile and will want to read. However, there is still a Lot of work that needs to be done over an extended period of time to get people to even know that your blog exists.

I think you are right on the money with your point, "Yes, if you concentrate on creating rock solid content and you’re really good at it, sure you might see high rankings in 3 years or so..." Content is an important Key but building links and traffic is what is going to get your content Read by a growing audience.

Hi Matt,

It is kind of humourus. The habit has to be kicked for any serious webmaster, it is such a time drain and not exactly productive. I have a mini check through my stats once a fortnight and dig a little deeper once a month, I find this works well for me. Google insight and Google trends are great for finding some low competition keywords, to pick some quick traffic off of.

haha, the stat junky sounds like me. I will not deny the fact that I fell in the same trap. Where every stat meant a make or break moment to me. It was like watching a stock market spike or crash on any given day. I think by doing that mistakes can also occur. I have finally kicked that habit and began looking for niches, trends and have learned Google Insights can be a good friend if understood correctly.

Great post Tim.

I was guilty of being a "Stat Junky". The iPhone made this so easy. You could check stats anywhere at anytime.

I've been clean for over 6 months now.
