@roman,

Your analogy is spot on, however I think it is slightly different becoming popular in an online setting. Because there are already so many bloggers now I think it would be difficult to become popular by simply copying problogger or other online dinosaurs, problogger started the whole blog movement really, therefore originally just having a blog and using it to discuss blogging and making money was Darren's "POD" point of difference. You have to search hard for your own point of difference whether it be a unique style, structure or opinion. To get yourself heard you must engage in social media pushing forward a strong personality, this does not mean you disagree with everything or look for an argument, but do voice your opinion when you research or experience in the discussion. There are millions of people surfing the online world, you only need to carve out a profitable niche to breate an online business.

Thanks for your comments

Popularity. I remember the unfairness of popularity in High School. If you where the captain of the football team or the head cheerleader, it did not matter what you say. Everything you did, everything you said was lined with gold. People listened when you talked regardless of what you where saying, people laughed at your jokes regardless of their quality.

Being popular makes all the difference. Another example, is Problogger. Some of his posts are not new or original material – other bloggers have said the same thing. But when Problogger says it, 120 comments are sure to follow about how great the post is.

The secret is to become popular. But how to do that? I wish I was the captain of the football team but I was not. In high school my content mattered – jokes where only laughed at if they were funny. I was not able to figure out how to become popular in high school, hopefully it is easier to become popular in the online world.
