Wow this was one of my older posts, I had to go back and re-read it :)

In terms of rankings I have never seen a positive impact from it, even when I have hit the first page of digg or had 25000 visits from stumble in a day. My rankings have never increased based on social success, however I never completely dismiss a theory and like the fact that people have different opinions and experiences.

Negative SEO is a possibility I have seen it happen, however long standing authority domains seem to be immune to the effects of negative spammy links.

Good post Tim and I agree with most of what you advise here with the exception that high traffic from social media sites doesn't affect your rankings :)
The point you make about age and number of established links being a defence against negative
seo is precisely why I believe it does not work!

Hi Kai,

Ye there are some worse ones though, I read on one blog that adsense helps??? I mean come on, the theory behiind it was that Google want to make $$$

I use adsense but I won't forever, it's a testing ground really to see what CTR's are like.

I was going to link some of these myths back to the original blogs where they came from but decided I could do without the comment trolling :)

I thought the webmaster one is pretty funny. I wish I can do something as simple as signing up for that just to get an edge over others who did not sign up.
