I thought I would put a list together today of some of the small things you can do today to increase your sites SEO presence and your authority. Some of these aspects are very simple yet you would be surprised how many sites do not implement them effectively. Anyway happy reading 
Anchor Your Links
This is something that any SEO should be doing, anchoring links with your targeted keyword text. Now a quick way to do this today is by approaching any sites you have links from already and kindly asking them to anchor the link appropriately. Use your link partners or friends you already have links from. Getting an overview of your links and anchoring all those that you can will create massive benefits for your SEO campaign.
Optimise Your Title Tag
Take a look at the title tags on your pages, are they targeted towards your chosen keywords? Are they relevant to the pages they are situated on? If not nows the time to change them. Take into account the keyword prominence, for example, if I were targeting “search engine optimisation” this would be a poor Title tag:

a better one would be…..
Search Engine Optimisation – SEO Wizz Consultancy Services
Put the most emphasis on your chosen keywords.
Meta Tags
Now there is a lot of debate as to the importance of META tags but I always find it good practice to include a META keywords tag. Again structure it like your title tag putting your main keywords first.
Headings
Make use of your heading tags. Use the same rule as above, your h1 should contain your most important keyword, h2 second most important and so on. If you only targeting 1 keyword use different variations within your first 3 headings.
Alt attribute
If you have images on your page insert the alt attribute into your image code and use your chosen keywords. Again the first 3 images should contain the keywords that page is targeting.
Content Body
There are again many debates as to the keyword density your content should possess. Keyword density is simply, if you had 1000 words on 1 page and 50 of your words were your targeted key phrases then your keyword density would be 5%. The main things to remember here are to use you main keywords near the top and bottom of your body text. I find anywhere between 3 – 5% keyword density is enough to create adequate relevancy.
Use Bold
I doubt this is that effective anymore but the idea of bolding your keywords is to create relevancy, to show Google these keywords are significant to your site. I would do this only on the first keyword in my main body. As I said the results will be minimal.
Outbound Links
I discussed out bound links in some detail over at SEOmoz , but basically if your linking to authoritative pages within your niche you should anchor those links with your chosen keywords. An exact metric is not in place for this type of SEO yet, but I proved it’s effectiveness when I targeted “seo consultant leeds“ , I wouldn’t suggest over doing this but a few links per page is good practice.
Fresh Content
There is no exact science for this but updating your content regularly does make your page look more attractive to search engines, after all their goal is to deliver the most accurate up to date info. I would suggest refreshing your content twice a week, you don’t have to have a complete overhaul, just enough to let Google see a little something different.
Write An Article
I really don’t care what anybody says article marketing has worked for me in the past and continues to do so today. These aren’t going to create masses of traffic or high PageRank links but what they are going to do is give you the chance to create Lot’s of optimised back links.
Write an article today, use your keyword in the title and in the body, anchor your link back and submit it to at least ten directories. On it’s own this won’t have an effect, however do it a few times a week and in a month you will notice a difference.
Send an Email
Search your keyword in Google, check out the sites, make a list of all those that are relevant to yours and email the webmaster with a view of creating a link partnership. Again reciprocal links do not hold as much weight but they are definitely worth a little effort every now and again.
Make A Comment
Leave a comment on a relevant blog or article, make sure you anchor your link and contribute to the discussion, you have the potential of getting a link and driving traffic to your site.
Write a Guest Post
Approach bloggers within your niche and ask if you can write a post on a relevant subject. Make the post interesting and informative and
let the readers know where they can find you.
Make Friends
Join social networking groups and start making friends, you will be surprised how many folk have similar interests and are able to give you a leg up every once in a while. Some of your most powerful back links can come from those you have created an online relationship with.

What are your thoughts on the optimum number of words to use in meta tags?

There is much debate as to the effectiveness of Meta tags and it seems to be common knowledge that Google does not look at them anymore. However some recent research I conducted show that sites that sit at the top of Google have a high keyword prominence in their META keywords.
As a matter of good practice I would try and use your main keywords once in your description tag, between 12 – 15 words long and I would input between 7 – 10 of your main keywords into the “keyword” meta tag.
I find this is a reasonable amount without been penalised for spam.
I am going to try all these. I am a newbie on this, but I am willing to learn.
