I found myself caught up in a discussion this week about Seo consultants and the role they play in helping online businesses reach there search marketing goals. The debate really surrounded one seo consultant who charged around $250 an hour for various services, the other side of the argument was whether you should even consider hiring a consultant at all.
With regards to the first point even I think charging $250 or £175 an hour is simply ridiculous, what do these guys think they can so much better than the average seo consultant on $75 or £50 an hour? Seo consultancy is a skill, a talent that has to be learnt and trialed but should it warrant an hourly rate or more than a top surgeon or lawyer??? No.
If an seo consultant is charging you more than £50 ($75) and hour you are simply being ripped off. This is the problem with the industry, the general public do not know enough about it or even have guidelines about good and bad seo consultancy work.
Due to this debate and recent comments I have read, I have decided to give people some general guidelines on this blog and some best practices when paying an seo consultant.
However the other line of argument, should you pay a consultant at all??? I happen to take a very strong view on this particular subject (are you surprised : )
Let me just give you a quick example of a comment on a well known forum made to a guy looking for seo services.
“Do not pay for SEO it is a waste of money! I learnt seo myself and my blog sits in the top ten of Google (no link to the blog), it is simple put keywords in your meta tags and optimise your pages. Then all you need are some links to your site, I do this through commenting and social bookmarking……”
First of all would this convince you that you have no need of an Seo consultant? If it would you really need to stop and think.
If seo was as simple as the above do you really think anyone would have the audacity to charge for it? (except scammers)
If you want real seo results the amount of research and time that need to go into it are pretty huge. If you want to learn seo yourself (which is possible) get reading and be prepared to wait!
This is the reason seo consultants offer real value.
A client has a great product or service but spend their weeks seeing to business related duties, they do not have time to learn and implement seo, yet to do so would increase sales and exposure.
If they can find a quality seo consultant the sales they would eventually earn would far out weigh the average seo consultant fees.
So to wrap this little rant up: )
- $250 an hour is a rip off
- Many new businesses need a website that is optimised
- Many businesses owners do not have time or expertise
- A quality seo consultant can give massive results
- The investment in quality seo is more than worthwhile
So if your convinced you need a quality seo consultant skip to my contact page. If you want to learn and have the time and patience, get reading in the sidebar. Either way I am happy to assist.
It’ll be another tutorial next
